TrichoScan Software: AI-Powered Hair Density and Scalp Analysis for Dermatology Clinics
TrichoScan is a clinically validated digital hair analysis software that objectively measures hair density, follicular miniaturization, anagen/telogen ratio and hair growth rate from scalp images captured with a digital microscope camera. Available as an add-on to MoleMax software, it replaces subjective visual assessment with reproducible, quantitative data your patients can see and your records can prove.

Developed by DatInf GmbH. Distributed in Australia and globally by MoleMax Systems, a division of Macquarie Medical Systems. Clinically validated with an operator agreement rate of approximately 97%.
What is TrichoScan Software?
TrichoScan is a computer-assisted digital trichoscopy software that combines epiluminescence microscopy with automatic image analysis to measure the biological parameters of human hair growth in a single clinical workflow. From version 5 onwards, hair is detected and classified automatically using artificial intelligence, eliminating the need for hair dyeing in most cases and significantly reducing procedure time.
The software integrates directly with MoleMax HD, MoleMax HD PRO, and MoleMax Lite systems, giving your clinic a unified platform for both skin lesion imaging and scalp diagnostics. Patient records, baseline images, and follow-up comparisons are all stored in one place.
TrichoScan is used by dermatologists, trichologists, hair transplant surgeons, and clinical researchers who need objective, repeatable hair analysis data to support diagnosis, monitor treatment response, and document patient outcomes.

How Trichoscan Works
Step 1: Identify the Assessment Area
Select a standardized thinning area of the scalp, typically approximately 2 cm2. The same site is used at every follow-up visit to ensure accurate longitudinal comparison.
Step 2: Clip the Hair (Standard Workflow)
A small area of hair is clipped close to the scalp. This is barely visible when surrounding hair is combed over it and grows back naturally. In the TrichoScan FAST workflow, clipping can often be skipped entirely.
Step 3: Capture the Scalp Image
The clipped area is photographed using a digital microscope camera or compatible dermatoscope connected to MoleMax software. Images are captured at standardized magnification.
Step 4: AI Analysis
TrichoScan version 5 automatically detects all hair strands, including curved and fine hair, using artificial intelligence. The software distinguishes anagen hair (growing, over 0.7 mm) from telogen hair (resting, under 0.7 mm), and terminal hair from vellus hair.
Step 5: Parameter Calculation
Hair density per cm2, diameter, growth rate, anagen/telogen ratio, and vellus/terminal ratio are calculated automatically and displayed in a structured report.
Step 6: Patient Report and Archiving
Results are stored in the patient record alongside baseline and previous follow-up data. The report can be printed or shared digitally for patient education and clinical records.
Benefits For Patients
- Painless, non-invasive assessment with no needles, biopsy, or discomfort. Procedure is completed in a single appointment.
- Quantified results instead of visual estimation, including hair density (per cm²), anagen/telogen ratio, and follicular miniaturization status.
- Measurable treatment tracking that builds patient trust through visible numerical improvement over time.
- Improved treatment adherence due to objective proof of progress across follow-up visits.
- Minimal cosmetic impact; only a small clipped area is required, which is easily concealed and regrows within days.
Clinical Applications
Androgenetic Alopecia (Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss)
Quantifies follicular miniaturization and tracks anagen/telogen ratio shifts. Enables objective staging and treatment monitoring beyond Norwood or Ludwig scales.
1. Alopecia Areata
Detects early vellus and terminal hair regrowth, including fine hairs not visible clinically, enabling early response tracking.
2. Telogen Effluvium
Measures anagen/telogen ratio shifts and monitors recovery trends over time with objective numerical data.
3. Hair Transplant Planning and Post-Transplant Monitoring
Supports donor and recipient area density mapping for surgical planning and tracks graft survival and regrowth post-procedure.
4. Treatment Efficacy Monitoring
Quantifies response to therapies such as minoxidil, finasteride, PRP, low-level laser therapy, and supplements with objective metrics.
TrichoScan Use Cases
- Hair Loss Assessment: Establishes baseline measurements of density, diameter, and growth ratios for longitudinal comparison.
- Alopecia Monitoring: Tracks regrowth patterns in conditions like alopecia areata with objective follicular data.
- Treatment Tracking: Monitors incremental changes during therapies such as finasteride across scheduled intervals.
- Research Applications: Serves as a standardized measurement tool in controlled dermatology studies and publications.
Provides standardized, reproducible endpoints for clinical studies, suitable for peer-reviewed research and trial validation.
